Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the right to contest particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
