British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
