{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with F1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when track officials were seen on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track marshals can be authorized to just dash across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was notified that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the governing body
"On lap three, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to access the circuit and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch marshals were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was displayed in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred after that point"
