England's Head Coach Asserts Top Talents Don't Always Make Up the Strongest Team
Thomas Tuchel has stated that putting together the highest-profile players does not guarantee creating the best squad dynamic. Tuchel suggested regardless of whether Jude Bellingham were fully fit after his shoulder injury, he might still have been omitted from the latest national team selection.
Focus on Team Spirit
The Three Lions' manager further revealed that the Arsenal winger's recall might not have occurred had his fellow Arsenal player Noni Madueke remained fit. The coach has put significant emphasis on team cohesion in his selection for the upcoming friendly against Wales and subsequent qualifier against Latvia.
"We're building the strongest squad," said the England boss, who questioned the traditional thinking that World Cup winners always select their most dangerous forwards.
Proven Success
Tuchel pointed to the positive energy during last month's international break when England beat Andorra and excelled against Serbia without Bellingham. He saw no reason to change the squad chemistry which delivered such positive performances.
- Bellingham left out despite club comeback
- Phil Foden omitted despite resurgence
- Grealish additionally missed out
Physical Condition Factors
Although the manager partly attributed Bellingham's absence due to physical condition, he recognized that the player wanted to be included during their conversation. Tuchel had earlier said sorry to the midfielder for remarks about his on-field behavior.
"Don't you think that behavior on the bench, commitment in sessions, and squad unity allows the starting eleven to play to their potential?" Tuchel asked.
Squad Selection Justification
Tuchel emphasized that his decisions were not personal against any player but rather recognized those who had performed in the last campaign.
"How would I justify dropping them while remaining authentic with my statements?" he posed.
Injury Enforced Changes
The sole alteration to the squad was compulsory with the unfit Noni Madueke making way for the returning Bukayo Saka. Tuchel clarified that the Arsenal winger might have missed out if Madueke stayed healthy.
Other absentees featured Chelsea's attacking midfielder, who continues to struggle with fitness issues. With only two additional gatherings before the World Cup, time is running out for some players to impress.
World Cup Scheduling Concerns
Tuchel expressed his desire for England's World Cup games to start later due to heat concerns in North America. He acknowledged this would create viewing difficulties for UK supporters but insisted player welfare remains the priority.
"I know supporters will not like it but for the team it's better if we play later," he stated. "The players make the sport and we have to protect them."
