Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
