Adolescent Found Deceased After Untrue Allegations of Stealing Ashes

One 14-year-old boy was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly accused of stealing the ashes of a dead baby during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has heard.

Heartbreaking Finding

Kai Lloyd's parents discovered his body in his room at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.

Untrue Accusations Begin

The investigation heard how his mother got a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if Kai was her offspring. The communication stated: "Tell him thanks for burgling my apartment."

In a statement read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, asserting her infant's ashes had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was false.

Law Enforcement Investigation

An official inquiry from police later concluded the supposed burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the items was not stolen in the beginning".

Media reports about the supposed stolen ashes generated social media responses, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his parent said people "understood it was him".

The "online posts were extremely distressing", she stated.

Mental Wellbeing Effect

She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views genuinely mattered to him.

"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "especially when this was untrue".

The teenager was arrested at home, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released under investigation.

Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had failed to contacted the family by the moment of his death.

Withdrawal and Anxiety

His mother said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like much longer".

When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had gone into the residence because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he needed, but denied taking anything.

Online Harassment

In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.

The inquest learned that one 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to end his life.

She had no concerns on the night before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".

She described him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is totally devastated".

He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".

Educational Response

The inquest heard from school staff at the local secondary school.

On 8 November, she "heard some boys talking that Kai had been detained and that was the initial I heard".

"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.

After the conversation, the educator said she called Kai's family telephone and provided a message saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.

The proceedings heard his family said they did not got that communication.

Formal Finding

Lead coroner informed the inquest he would await reports regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.

Delivering a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.

"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the platform of online networks.

"During November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his questioning he was freed while inquiries proceeded."

The official determined: "Exists no evidence that the actions or omissions of any agency caused or added to his passing and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to discern his purpose."
